Blog Journal 5

Until this course I have had no experience with Twitter, but now that I have began taking this course I have played around a little bit by responding to a couple of tweets by some education twitter pages. These were mainly just comments on content in regards to teachings making due with online learning as well as the frustrations that come with that. I have not found it as beneficial as I know that it can be because I have let to participate in a live discussion and I know that would be more helpful. I feel that Twitter could be used to network with other educators to collaborate and share ideas.

The Digital divide is definitely an issue that can affect students. The students who do not have as common access to technology are going to get flustered and overwhelmed when they are expected to know how to work certain programs only because "you should know this" mentality due to someone's age. This could affect a students productivity when it comes to standardized tests that are starting to be done almost exclusively online. Some causes of this divide could be an economic difference between schools as well as between individual students, and this could definitely cause me to change my teaching strategy by setting aside time to allow students to ask questions and allow for time to help students who need help to ask questions.

When it comes to software that I will use in my classroom, I will work with flipgrid as well as Kahoot. Kahoot is a fun way to get the students to test what they know, and it allows for a no stakes assessment to assess not only how well the information was retained, but how effective my teaching was on the topic. Flipgrid will also be useful to help students complete surveys on how they are feeling about the material tha is covered in class, and is also beneficial in that it is a quick to have students complete quizzes in a low stakes assessment, also to help determine the best ways to review.

  1. Hi, David!

I also have little experience using Twitter, so it has been super interesting to see all of the resources available on the site, especially when it comes to the education field. I liked your point about using Kahoot in the classroom. Kahoot is such a fun and easy way to create an interactive learning environment for students, which will ultimately help them feel more comfortable within the classroom and promote their success. Great post!

  2. Hey David!

I totally feel you with not think Twitter is super beneficial when you're just lurking an not talking with people, I need to work on that myself. One of my worst fears as an educator is to make my students feel bad for not understanding or knowing something, especially with something like technology, where a person's experience can vary depending on the socioeconomic class. I would personally be hesitant to utilize many web or tech based resources or assignments unless all of my students could have equal access to technology in class.
